tagaungTagaung lies 127 miles north of Mandalay on the left bank of the Ayeyarwaddyriver. There is a popular saying in Myanmar “The Myanmar originated in Tagaung”. That means that first Myanmar civilization originated in Tagaung region situated in the central Myanmar. Although Tagaung is said to be the oldest city in Myanmar, the excavation produces no evidences, but a few clay votive tablets datable to Pagan period. However, by radiocarbon analysis of the charcoal specimens from the excavated sites, the wooden gates can be determined to belong to 2nd to 3rd century, and the assembly hall, datable to the century A.D.
